OIL CHANGES
After a great deal of research for the past couple of years, on which oil to use in the 1800 Goldwing, Theyhave come to a conclusion. It's my opinion after using Honda HP4 that there is a better oil at a much better price.
Rotella T 5w40 synthetic. This can be purchased at Wal-Mart for around $16.00 per gallon.
It meets all the requirements for the GW and is a full synthetic with"no friction modifiers" (energy conserving) which isbad for the clutch on the 1800. Accodrding to all the testsit seems to work better than HP4, and the guys on the chat lines say it makes for quieter shifting. So I deciced to try it myself.
I use the Super Tech st6607 or Fram PH6607 from Wal-mart and the Rotella T 5w40 Synthetic making an oil change $20.00 bucks versus $45.00 with Honda oil and filter. I have been amazed at how much quieter the shifting is, no more clunking on the downshift coming up to a light. Also the 1800 whine is more reserved. So all in all I think I have found the right oil and filter for me! You can change your oil more often and still save money! You have to make your owndecision on what to use and what price to pay.
Stock up before prices go up, Like I did!
Oil Filters
According to MCN motorcycle consumer news, who tested many oil filters, the best filter for the 1800 was the:
Wal Mart Super Tech ST 6607 or Fram PH6607. And the ST 7317 is a longer filter and is for the 1500's.
And, If you were not aware, the 1500 filter works on your 1800 too. These tested better than the Honda filters, and at a cost of $2.42. You get a better filter for far less money. Sorry Honda.
One other note, it does not void your warranty to use an aftermarket filter. The Manguson Moss Actof the United States Congress says that if it voids your warranty then the company must provide the filter for free.
Almost all filters meet or exceed the original specs.

AIR FILTER
Most of the basic service tasks on the GL1800 are straightforward enough. Spark plugs, brake pads and even rear wheel removal are all easier to do than on previous Goldwing models. However, replacing the air filter causes many GL1800 owners to think twice about doing the job themselves because the top shelter has to be removed to get at the filter.
This tutorial shows the procedure I used to do the job.

INTERCOM AIR NOISE
Our J&M microphone is one-sided. I found out by taking off the foam cover. We have a open faced helmet andI'venoticed there is a lot of "air-noise" while talking to my co-rider or onthe CB radio. But, when I put a fingerover 1/2 of the microphone the "air-noise" stopped. I've found a company that makes a"Windsock Wind Deflector" It's ahighly durable cover that is easily slipped over your microphone foamto deflect the wind away from your microphone intercom system. You can even tweak it some more by turning the coverso that the one sided microphone is being covered more by the cover. All I know is it works and we don't have to go to the full faced helmets. I've found that they can be hotter and you loose some of your side vision. They have a website http://www.windsockwinddeflector.com/Check out Lisa & Tom's website. It's better than tape!

FRONT FENDER
Fender Extensions and the Tulsa Belly Pan is just another bit ofInsurance to protect your investment. It is possibletorun over something and it can hit your engine case causing it to crack or even knock a hole in it. The replacement and labor is very costly.
WASHING and WAXING
The Honda dealer has a spray. It works wonders. On top of the hill at the Honda dealer there are 2 types. I believe they are the same. One is a name brand and cost more. The other brand is"Motorcycle Stuff" it's called "Spray Cleaner & Polish" it cost $6.57 for a 14 oz spray can. It works wonders! Easier and quicker than Carnuba Wax. The bugs come off easier too! But, it is better to POLISH and WAX your WING. Meguiar's hasgreat waxes!
SEAT COVERS
For about $18.77 "SOME" Wal-mart'ssellsa auto seat pad that works wonders on the Gold Wing. It's called "PVC Seat Cushion" Made by "Roadmaster" I've only found it at Batesville, Conway and North Little Rock. The others don't carry it. Iteven has a handle to carry.Has a zipper for removal and cleaning. You also have the ability to cut and custom sew your shape. But I think it is just fine the way it is.Those gel pads can cost over $100.00. You can purchase thecushion on their website. It is http://www.roadmasterusa.com/seatcushions.php The cost is$21.99 on their site ~ $18.77 at Wal-mart.
RADIATOR
Rinse out your radiator with water hose during the hot weather.
SPECIALTY TOOLS
I've heard that there's a special socket that a person needs to check or replace the bearings of the front triple tree. ANYONE HAVE INFO?
AIR FILTERS
The mechanic at Sunrise has said that those fancy filters that give you more air means more dirt too. Stick with the OEMFilters.
TRAILERS
Spare tire, and folding tire t-iron from Wal-mart and carry more tools, light and air pump etc...
LIGHTS
Did you know that on the left side of the fuse panel, after you remove the cover, there are 2 screws (positive & negative) that is fused (15A) and is on the Assy. circuit? It makes it easy to install electrical items that aren't plug and play.
